AIDFI bags int’l prize
For its ram pump technology and program, the Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI) placed second in the Education and Welfare category of the 2007's Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, a prestigious international competition honoring excellent sustainable energy solutions in the developing world and the United Kingdom.
The ram pumps, already installed in 68 communities in Western Visayas by the time of awarding, operate through water power alone, without need for diesel or electricity, and are made of low-cost and locally available parts.
The pumps continuously supply 200 to 1,000 liters of water to each household each day, providing water for irrigation, drinking, and hygiene to hillside villages. Aside from saving time and meeting the basic need for safe water, this convenient supply also allows community members to plant during the dry season to raise their income.
AIDFI completed the roster of winners from outside the UK - 11 organizations from countries such as India, China, and Bangladesh. Money from the award-giving institution is intended to help winners develop their respective technologies and increase the number of beneficiaries.
